A novel capturing the absurdity of the times, it is entertainment with a message.

His career hanging by a thread, young news reporter Cedric Bonhomie is reluctantly sent to cover the war in Syria sparking a high-stakes adventure fuelled by espionage, romance, and a personal quest for truth.

Seemingly pulled by an invisible string, Cedric has a major existential crisis as he becomes embroiled in a shadowy intelligence operation deep in the Syrian desert. Desperate to extricate himself and with the help of some unlikely allies, he blunders his way to an extraordinary final predicament that may just plunge the world into untold chaos.

Jaded reporter, perpetual dreamer and reluctant spy, Cedric Bonhomie triumphs in this first installment of the Cedric Bonhomie Adventures, emerging the accidental hero in a series of disasters from London to Damascus.

Funny, mysterious and thought provoking, Cedric’s unique outlook in Chairman of the Bored offers the reader a refreshingly honest and comical antidote to the confusing times we live in.

About the author

Jethro Charlton

The best advice for writers I ever heard is to write the book you want to read. Well, that’s what I tried to do with Chairman of The Bored.

I always loved offbeat stories featuring an anti-hero who manages to scrape through a series of wild adventures. Think, Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, The Trial by Franz Kafka, The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser, A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole or Vintage Stuff by Tom Sharpe. Books like these are hard to come by so I decided to write my own.

Cedric Bonhomie is young, confused, somewhat paranoid and incompetent. He yearns for greatness and is willing to take some big risks to see where life will take him. Along the way he is confronted by challenges that will force him to question his fragile world view, and will change him in unexpected ways.

Part comical adventure, part mystical journey, Chairman of the Bored is an ode to the underdog and a kind of antidote to the post-truth world we live in. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed dreaming it up.
